Sorbaderm - The Effective Protective

Aspen Medical are pleased to announce the launch of the first of our Sorbaderm No-Sting Barrier Film products. Sorbaderm 28ml pump spray format is available from 1st June 2010 on Drug Tariff and provides healthcare professionals with a new solution for protecting patient’s skin against irritation that can be caused by contact with bodily fluids, wound fluids, adhesive products and also from friction. 1ml and 3ml single-use foam applicator formats of Sorbaderm will be available on Drug Tariff from 1st August 2010.

The alcohol-free, no-sting formulation means Sorbaderm can be applied on both intact ‘at-risk’ skin and skin that is already damaged without causing discomfort to patients. By providing effective protection against sources of irritation and damage, Sorbaderm can not only help prevent damage occurring but can also help damaged skin begin to recover.

Sorbaderm’s protection power was put to the test through clinical evaluation of its performance when used to protect against damage from urine and faecal incontinence on highly compromised patients who were infected with Clostridium Difficile or Norovirus. The results showed that in comparison to the current NSBF product available in the trust*, Sorbaderm provided the same, if not better, level of skin protection.
Full details of this study are available in Continence UK, June 2010 issue.

Journal of Wound Care

Mesitran Helps Healing!

New study published in the September edition of the Journal of Wound Care:

Through thorough in vitro research at the Stellenbosch University (South Africa)to determine whether Mesitran Hydro-active dressings and silver products either stimulate cell growth or kill growth (cytoxicity),Prof. Donald Du Toit and Ben Page concluded that when wound healing and new tissue formation is the objective, the honey-hydrogel dressing was the favoured dressing due to its lack of cytotoxic effects and its positive effect on new cell proliferation, compared with the silver dressing sample tested in the study.

"The multi-purpose honey-based product used in this in vitrostudy has definitive advantages over silver dressings, especially when wound healing is the objective. This is because the unique cell biological characteristics of honey favour keratinocyte and fibroblast proliferation, which play a key role in re-epithelialisation and re-establishment of the extracellular matrix."

“Poor keratinocyte and fibroblast cell proliferation and cell monolayer formation was detected uniformly in the silver-treated wells when compared with honey implants (group 2) and untreated controls (group 1)”

"Honey-impregnated dressings have the potential to promote new tissue regeneration or healing, and there is evidence to support this."

New Indications for Sorbsan

New Indications for Sorbsan

Haemostatic properties to help manage wounds

For over 25 years, Sorbsan dressings have been used to manage wound exudate, maintaining a moist wound healing environment.

Sorbsan dressings are also ideal for minor bleeding wounds because the calcium alginate fibres help to stimulate platelet aggregation, resulting in haemostasis.

Calcium ions released into the wound during the ion exchange (that also enables alginates to absorb fluid and turn to gel) help in the activation of platelets as well as being one of the clotting factors (clotting factor IV), thereby promoting haemostasis.

Clinical Evidence

Sorbsan Flat and Plus dressings have been tested for their compatibility in contact with blood and for their ability to promote haemostatic (clotting) activity. For more information on Clinical Evidence please contact your local representative or customer services.

More Wounds Respond to PolyMem

More Wounds Respond to PolyMem™

Available on Drug Tariff from 1st July, PolyMem Wic dressings allow patients with deeper, open wounds to see and feel the difference PolyMem can make. This versatile format, also available with Silver, provides increased absorbency vs. standard PolyMem and the absence of a film backing, allows absorption from all sides of the dressing.

It can be cut, rolled or folded to suit the size and depth of the wound or used flat, under an appropriate secondary dressing, on wounds with medium to heavy exudates- just like a wound contact layer!

PolyMem dressings were developed to minimise procedural trauma when changed and help promote comfort between changes. Clinical experience also demonstrates PolyMem actively encourages the healing process.
